I have a dream!
Who doesn’t know that line?…and who said it? …and when? Just a few words, that inspired an awful lot of action. Life-changing, world-changing action. A dream did that. These days, in business, dreaming has a bad name…it’s associated with wishing and hoping, with pie-in-the-sky thinking and head in the clouds delusion. Certainly not with action. Just think about your own dreams for a second - not those weird ones you have at night - I’m talking about the dreams you have for your future…your ideal future. That’s what most of us dream about, don’t we? Our ideal future - that place and time when we have achieved success - no matter what we consider that success to be. A wonderful relationship with someone truly special. A great connection with our kids. A business that runs smoothly, without the long hours and the effort. Financial freedom. Health and fitness. Making a difference. Leaving a legacy. Aren’t these the sort of things we dream about for ourselves? Feel passionately about? Passion drives action. Martin Luther King’s dream, his passionate belief in a dream, drove massive action. Your dreams can do that too… How? By focusing on them, getting clear about what you really want…what’s really important to you. By planning your life around your dreams and ditching all the ‘stuff’ that’s taking you in the wrong direction. By getting conscious about the decisions you are making day to day. And… By taking action every day that moves you towards your dreams. What you do today echoes in your future…it creates it. Having had a bit of a rant last week about the macho long hours and hard work culture out there...I feel the need this week to redress the balance just a little and give a shout out to the equally misguided (in my humble opinion) people at the other end of the scale...
The folks who believe that all they have to do is know what they want, put it out there, and 'the universe will provide'. Often the same people who say that those who do well have somehow been lucky, that the universe has been kind to them. Well there's another saying that I was brought up with...'God helps those who help themselves'! The Universe is a match-funder, one might say. You can't just think something, create a vision board, talk about it and have everything magically or spiritually, fall into place. Yes, being conscious of what's really important to you, having it clear in your mind, reminding yourself on a daily basis what you want in life and what you're aiming for...is all essential to your success. But if you don't back these thoughts up with concrete plans...if you don't get off your backside to make them happen...if you don't put in the work needed every single day...then your ideal future will never be your real future. It will always be just pictures on a board. And I'm not just talking about your business here, I'm talking about your other priorities too. If you want great relationships, with your other half, your children, your business associates...you have to work at them...every day. If you want to be healthy...you have think about what you're eating, how much exercise you've had, how much sleep you're getting...every day. If you want to write a book...you have to write...every day! Remember that great line from the film Gladiator..."What you do in life echoes in eternity"..? Well it's the same for us...what we do today, echoes in our future...it creates it. We can't wait around for the universe to give us a hand up...but equally, if we're going to work hard, we need to make sure it's to create a successful life, not just a successful business. To achieve success in life, we all need to
Will you be happy with the echo? For more information on how MPL can help you visit www.mariannepage.co.uk or contact me on hello@mariannepage.co.uk Pardon my frankness, but there’s a lot of hard-core, macho bullshit out there at the minute. Loud, shouty voices telling us that hard work is the only route to success...that we’ve got to put the hours in, that business owners don’t have free-time or time for holidays…that we have to show that we’re “committed”…that if we don’t start work at 5am and are still going at 2 the following morning, we’re pussies, and don’t deserve success…
Well, I guess that depends on what you class as success, doesn't it. For me success is about understanding your true priorities - the things that are really important in your life; things like your health, your relationships, financial freedom, leaving a legacy, making a difference - and consciously working on all of them, every day and every week…reminding yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing, what your ideal future…your version of success…looks like. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in working hard…and I do, it was the way I was brought up.I’ll work hard when I have a deadline to meet, a commitment to keep, a client to deliver for.But I won’t just work silly hours for effect…to boast about it on social media…or because I think that’s what entrepreneurs should do. I’ll put systems in place to make my life easier, and get help when I need to…when hard work needs to be done…but not necessarily by me! There are too many examples of people who burnt themselves out, took to drugs to keep themselves going, have a life littered with failed relationships.People who worked bloody hard to make money and failed to make a life. Life can be simple and you can be truly successful when you get conscious about what’s really important to you…when you stop to smell the roses or the coffee now and again…when you take a break and spend time with people who make you laugh or people you love. Life is short, and it’s for living today…making every day of it count. For more information on how MPL can help you visit www.mariannepage.co.uk or contact me on hello@mariannepage.co.uk |
